My Recruitment Journey So Far...

I started my career in education recruitment almost instantly after graduating from university last year. I researched various industries and consultancies, and then I came across SMILE Education.

I am very proud to be the first ever female Entrepreneur in Residence at University of Worcester!

I am honoured to have been invited to join a select group of successful business people to take up this unique role at the University of Worcester, supporting and mentoring the next generation of entrepreneurs.

So last Thursday I had the pleasure of spending the whole day at Worcester University as part of their Worcester Award Gold Mock interviews and presentations. Having employed graduates for the last 7 years, improving employability skills in education is something I feel passionate about. Especially bridging the gap between education and the world of work which is often hugely evident to me in the graduates I interview.

So 7 years ago we had an idea to start a new Education Recruitment Business, I was working in IT recruitment and it was tough. The recession had hit, no one wanted to recruit, I had “blanked” 2 months in a row for the first time ever and feeling generally pretty miserable.

Another recruitment agency looking for staff....

So I started this article by copying and pasting my standard job advert and as I read through it I realised I had read it all before and was pretty uninspired!

We are recruiting! We want great sales people and/ or experienced recruiters. I think we have the best benefits in the business (but of course I would tell you that I am the MD) ……

We offer up to 51 days leave every year (not including bank holidays), the opportunity for promotion every 3 months (it’s possible to get from Trainee to Senior Consultant in your first year, I can show you people that have done it) and up to 20% commission.

We also have lots of competitions and prizes including holiday vouchers, meals out, early finishes and lots of other exciting incentives. I think those are all pretty good reasons to come to work but they aren’t the full reason I love my job and my business. Let me tell you why I believe Smile is the best place to work:

  • We share ideas and work together as a team

Everyone has the chance to input into our business, two of our directors sit permanently in our office and the team freely approach them. Everyone takes a turn to run team meetings and we always share candidates, of course we are competitive and love a good “race to place”. But we always remember the important thing is that Smile wins the booking!

  • We train

We can only grow if we develop the people in our business, we have just significantly invested in a management training scheme which is open to everyone once they have completed a successful year billing with us. 70% of our consultants have been out on highly regarded external training in the last year and everyone has undergone our internal structured programme.

  • We are flexible to the individual

We offer flexibility to those who need it! We have several employees who work part time hours and 2 that job share, this means they get that much craved work life balance.

  • We laugh, celebrate and have fun

Our monthly breakfast meeting is an absolute highlight, consultant of the month is always fiercely fought and it’s not just about billing we also reward special achievement. That’s nominated by all the team for the person who best represents Smiles values.

We go off on champagne club every half term which includes fine dining and a few drinks on a Friday afternoon. We are taking the whole team to Barcelona in September as a thank you for their hard work.

I love these big things but it’s the genuine way we share success, our giant wall game where you move your counter according to your achievements, the placement dances and the team competitions just for the glory that really show our culture.

  • We give back

We genuinely care about schools and our local community, that means we collect for local charities every single week. We run an annual family day, we volunteer in schools and we build genuine friendships with schools and teachers.

This is what the team think!
