What is your background?

After leaving Education I qualified as a Nursery Nurse and went onto become a Toddler Room Leader in a Nursery. After working in Nurseries for several years I was looking for a new challenge. I then started working within education recruitment predominantly Early Years where I have supported a variety of Nurseries across the West Midlands and built up some strong rela

What is your background?

Having worked in recruitment since 2008, I have become devoted to this fast paced, fun-loving but more importantly highly rewarding environment. During my career as a Resourcer I have developed many skills and attributes which have bought me many successes to this present date, including winning awards for my achievements. Over time, whilst working in education

No man is an island- Smile Education Family Day

Working as a supply teacher can be a lonely business. Historically, a large proportion of our teachers have mentioned this as part of their feedback on the service generally provided by agencies; they really miss the comradery and sense of belonging that comes from being part of a team in a permanent role.

Almost 2 years ago my colleague Katy and I took the reins at Smile education after a management buyout. This was our chance to change that! I’m sure she won’t mind me saying that she has been a huge support to me over my time at Smile and Vice Versa. Having somebody that really understands and can empathise with you in your role helps you get through every knock back. As well as having someone to share each success with, making them mean so much more…..this is exactly how we wanted our teachers to feel!

We set to work thinking of ways to make people feel valued, involved and part of the Smile family. Over the past 2 years this has included offering CPD, Christmas team drinks (where far too many glasses of bubbly were consumed!), thank you cards and gifts, supply teacher of the year award and the introduction of our Smile Family Day.

This is a fantastic opportunity during the school holidays to see all of our contacts from schools, teachers and their families in a relaxed environment where we can have a proper catch up! It’s a great day for everyone involved and really gives our staff a chance to socialise and get to know each other. I remember last year seeing the look of surprise on some people’s faces when they recognised others from being in school then realising they were also from Smile! Hearing people share stories from classrooms and their favourite places to work made me 100% sure that the family day was a positive thing for us to and will firmly be an annual event for us in the future.

There are so many things going on throughout the day...... we have a raffle, bouncy castle, face painting and my favourite; glitter tattoos (I have a huge weakness for anything sparkly!) This year we are lucky enough to have other providers joining in the fun, including a fantastic Sensory Bus that children will be able to use on the day. Here’s what Louise, one of our supply teachers, had to say about attending last year;

“Being invited to last year’s Smile Family was fantastic! Not only was there entertainment for my son (who's 2) but there was food too for everyone.  I was able to switch off, enjoy a day off and chat to like-minded people and enjoy the sunshine! Seeing people win awards too for their hard work really brought home what a great company Smile is. A great charity focussed event not to be missed!”

The event is totally free to attend and open to everyone that wants to enjoy a great day during the summer holidays. Also, if you are looking to get advice about working on supply, want to speak to other supply teachers or just want to get your very first glitter tattoo J, we would love to see you there. I really appreciate the huge difference community involvement can make to an area and its children and families so if you know anyone that would be interested in attending please share and tag the article.

Last year was such a success, I am so looking forward to this years’ event.

Turning BRILLIANT cover supervisors into BRILLIANT teachers!

As a Maths Graduate interested in teaching I had never even heard of a Cover Supervisor. In my eyes, my option was to spend a year as a volunteer unpaid in a school and then another year unpaid teacher training. For me, this was too distant, I wanted a job involving Education and quickly!
